Sarraf Split
The Banana Split was invented by David Evans Strickler in Latrobe, Pennsylvania in 1904. For most of my life, I lived outside of Latrobe, on a small farm in rural Pennsylvania.
Sarraf is my paternal grandfather's original surname before adoption into the Manski family. In an effort to connect our family to our roots, my father taught himself to cook authentic Syrian food. I grew up in a home of robust flavors reflected in this project. Sarraf Split explores identity, race, and place through offering a dessert in aim of cultural exchange. Please feel free to take a recipe card and create the dessert at home. I encourage you to experiment and create your own original dish.
